Nearly a decade in the making, the effort reflects a powerful collaboration between local government, nonprofits, community members, and federal partners. As the first purpose-built trail network in San Juan County, Baker’s Park is designed to provide sustainable, accessible recreation while preserving open space, encouraging healthy lifestyles, and strengthening the local economy through outdoor recreation. Planning began in 2018, with years of consensus-building, approvals, and fundraising paving the way. The project officially broke ground in 2023, and in fall 2024 the first 7-mile intermediate loop opened to the public. Offering sweeping views of Silverton and the surrounding San Juan Mountains, this inaugural trail has quickly become a favorite for runners, hikers, bikers, families, older adults, and visitors alike. In summer 2025, the project focus is on planning, refining existing trail segments, and preparing for the next phase of growth. Silverton is the only incorporated town in all of San Juan County, which has the highest mean elevation of any county in the U.S. at 11,240 feet. San Juan County encompasses 389 square miles, 89% of which is public land, and enjoys easy access to the recreational amenities of the Four Corners Region and desert Southwest. Until the Baker’s Park project, BLM lands in San Juan County had fewer than 10 miles of trails open to mountain bikes and existing routes were primarily unmaintained mining roads and historic pack mule trails - steep, highly technical, and prone to washouts.
